At Vocus HQ, the summer is off to a great start as we kick off our largest internship program to date. This year, we have almost 20 interns getting their feet wet and in the door working in our Sales, Government Relations, Marketing, Finance, Technology and Human Resources departments. Their ages range from high school all the way up through graduate school with a variety of majors represented. No matter what year you are in school, an internship with Vocus is a great audition for the working world.

Our interns don’t get coffee or push paper. Bryan, our Government Relations intern who is also a Marketing major at the University of Maryland, says “instead of coming in and getting everyone coffee and filing, I’m getting my own coffee and going to work on my own files.” Like Bryan, our interns are involved with special projects across all departments and event experience some exposure to the world of marketing and Public Relations software. When asked, most of our interns have said their favorite experience so far has been attending our Users Conference earlier this month. The interns were able to learn more about the industry by listening to the different sessions held during the conference.
Our Internship Coordinator Brindisi says, “We provide a well-rounded internship experience at Vocus. Our on boarding process brings each intern up to speed on what Vocus offers, sells and the marketing and public relations industry in general. Each department creates meaningful projects for interns so they have a good sense of what the department does for the company on a whole. We also invite interns into regular meetings for other departments not represented in the internship program so they are exposed to other functions of the company. Intern seminars like Resume Writing, Intro to Business Law and Social Media for Business are especially created to deepen the skills and knowledge of someone getting ready to enter the workforce. A field trip to our Media Research Center gives a behind-the-scenes look into one of our products, one of North America’s largest media database. Some of our current employees haven’t ever seen that.” Brindisi does an excellent job of coordinating the intern’s curriculum with us and exposes them to all facets of Vocus. By the end of the summer, our interns will have a great grasp on what it is like to be a Vocus employee and the various opportunities to contribute to the company.
Head of Campus Recruiting, Sherri, says “The internship program is a great way for us to get more insight about a potential employee before we make a full time job offer- we gain so much more by seeing someone in a job rather than meeting them during a short interview. It definitely gives interns a leg up in the full time interview process- we would love to transition all of our high performing interns into full time employees of Vocus.”
Our motto of “work hard, play hard” applies to our internship program, as well. Last week, the group enjoyed an intern lunch at California Tortilla down the road from our HQ. It was a great opportunity for them to get to know each other, what they’re studying and what they’re working on at Vocus. The interns get to have some fun around the HQ as well and even throw in a fun prank now and then. If you’re interested in a summer internship with Vocus, you can apply online. At this time, we are still considering applicants for an Online Marketing Analytics internship and a copywriting internship.
